Please Drink the Water in Mexico

We always get this question “Is the water safe to drink in Mexico?” People wonder if on their Mexico trip they need to bring a filter or whatever. I usually encourage them to just rely on botteld water. It is available at any local OXXO (like 7-Eleven) and we always have a good supply in our vans.

I usually just drink the water as most areas have water systems. But you never know–like the pipes may be old or the sysstem may be down.

New Mexico City Filtered Water Policy

Now the city council in Mexico City has passed an ordinance that all cafes must have filtered water- not bottled – availble starting in six months. This will be a big boost as it will reduce the amount of bottles used. It wont affect the jillions of street vendors, but it will be a start.

I can imaging though that many visitors will be cautious and not consume the new filtered water–we ahve a general distrust of alll things Mexican. Especially the water.

Our Mexico City Hotel’s Water

We have been using a pair of hotels that are in a great location. They are modest but they put us close to many cool areas by foot. They are Hotel Metropol and Hotel Marlowe– very similar and built by the same company.

Both hotels have a tap in the bathroom that is filtered water. This is very convenient for guests as they can use it and also fill their bottles before going out.

The lobby of the Hotel Marlowe--every room has filtered water on tap.
