Jan 1, Thursday Arrive Tuxtla Gutierrez airport (TGZ) and overnight in Chiapa de Corzo Hotel La Ceiba L We lodge in this small town and take in local foods, crafts, and the historic plaza Be sure to send Dave your arrival(TGZ) and fly out (from VSA) details. Look for someone at the airport with a sign with your name on it.
Jan 2, Friday Chiapa de Corzo Hotel La Ceiba L We have many sites we can see in this area including Sumadero Canyon, local eateries and food vendors, ancient churches, and the hospitality of a small town. Chiapa de Crozo is historic, quiet, and a perfect place to stroll the plaza.
Jan 3, Saturday San Cristobal de las Casas Villas Casa Morada L We travel today to the center of culture in Chiapas- San Cristobal de las Casas (SCDLC). Our cozy hotel is a bit off the main path and easy walking distance to the market, center, and Guadalupe church. There is much to do here–including just relaxing and enjoying the place. We will get a short van and walking tour and a map to get you set to explore on your own.
Jan 4, Sunday San Cristobal de las Casas Villas Casa Morada Plan on getting involved in day trips the next two days if you want…or just explore San Cristobal on your own. Optional day trip to the village of Amatenango, a Tzeltal village known for its potters. Get invloved with seeing how the pottery is produced as well as other local crafts.
Jan 5, Monday San Cristobal de las Casas Villas Casa Morada Again—our guide will be availble to help you get set on your own around town or take of on a day trip. Optional day trip to the unique Chamula and to a village nearby where you will experience weaving from start to finish. Local foods, expore the Tzotzil church—then back to San Cristobal.
Jan 6, Tuesday Naha Naha Lodge L,D This morning we head north east for 5 hours to the remote indigenous community of Naha. On the way we may stop at the ruins at Tonina–as well as some local cheeses along the way. This site is distinguished by its well preserved stucco sculptures and particularly by its in-the-round carved monuments, not seen in Mesoamerica since the end of the much earlier Olmec civilization.
Jan 7, Wednesday Naha Naha Lodge B,L, D All day to take in the customs and ways of this ancient group. Naha is an isolated indigenous village in the jungle NE of SCDLC. Naha’s Mayan indigenous people are some of the few remaining speakers of the endangered Lacandon language.Lacondan culture is ancient and fascinating and we will get a full intro to the foods, customs, etc.
Jan 8, Thursday Palenque TBD B,L, D This morning we head north west toward majestic Palenque–about two hours away. The Palenque ruins date back to 226 BC to around 799 AD. This site contains some of the finest architecture, sculpture, roof comb and bas-relief carvings that the Mayas produced.
Jan 9, Friday Villahermosa, Tabasco Hotel Olmeca Plaza B All day to take in this vast ruins, then late afternoon to Villahermosa. Villahermosa is about 2 hrs from Palenque.
Jan 10, Saturday B Fly home from Villahermosa airport (VSA) Plan to fly anytime this day.
Price is $1690 ($300 single supplement)and will include all hotels/lodges, food as noted, guide, entrance to Sumadero and Palenque, and transport from the airport and back to our final airport.
